If you were to ask me why blue kitchens are so popular these days, my response would be to give you a sneak peek at my own kitchen.

Right now, I’m standing at my elegant sky-blue kitchen island, admiring the gleaming brass pulls on its cabinets, and the vintage blue-and-white china plates carefully stacked on an open shelf. On the island’s polished marble countertop, a large wooden dish heaped with lemons adds a zesty pop of brightness and fragrance, perfectly accenting the complementary shades of blue. It reminds me very much of the stunning blue cabinets from Meyers’ feel-good festive favorite, The Holiday, or the understated blue-gray kitchen island in The Intern.

There’s just something about the color blue that speaks of refinement, comfort, peace and nostalgia, all of which are very Nancy Meyers qualities. In fact, her kitchen inspirations (blue and otherwise) have been splashed over Pinterest for 20 years now, and for good reason.

Join me now as we discover why blue kitchens in particular are making such a big comeback, ahead of Meyers’ latest comedy, set to hit our screens on Christmas Day 2027. What’s more, I’ll be sharing 4 standout shades of blue you really won’t be able to resist!

Blue Kitchens Start With a Nancy Meyers Kitchen and a Can of Paint

Once upon a time, Meyers’ most popular cinematic interiors came from It’s Complicated and Something’s Gotta Give, with their calming shades of white and cream and their stylish but lived-in vibe. Audiences especially adored Meyers’ judicious use of inset cabinets, shining marble, fresh-cut flowers or herbs by the sink, and super-sized kitchen islands.

That being said, these spaces didn’t feature much use of the cultural zeitgeist’s current favorite color, blue. Instead, it was more of a tasteful accent, found in the director’s strategic use of blue-and-white china or nautical striped linens.

Consequently, these days, our ideal Nancy Meyers kitchen will make the same artful use of layers, but the cabinets and islands will be painted soothing shades of sky blue, denim, or navy.

Why White and Blue Kitchens Feels Right Again

Not sure why blue and white kitchen decor is so modish? To find the reasons why, all you need to do is take a look at our current dining and entertaining culture.

The truth is that, in a post-Covid world troubled by economic and geopolitical woes, people are choosing to eat in and entertain at home a lot more. And, since we’re all spending so much time in our kitchens, we’re keen to make them a more homely, comforting and inspiring space.

Blue and white kitchens, then, are a mood-boosting reaction to the rather sterile white and greige kitchens that have been all the rage for too long. Not only that, but having blue and white decor and kitchen accessories harks back to “the good old days” of our happiest family memories, prompting a delicious sensation of nostalgia. Think Grandma’s blue and white transferware dishes, a vintage blue ticking stripe tablecloth, blue antique jars on a hutch.

There’s no doubt about it: blue is the color of history, of memory, of home.

Four Blue Kitchen Ideas Worth Painting Right Now

If you can’t wait to use some stylish blue kitchen ideas in your own home, you’ve come to the right place! I’m about to reveal 4 stunning on-trend shades of blue that will turn your kitchen into a Hollywood haven in no time. Just keep in mind that each of these hues works best alongside warmer surroundings, like walnut or honey oak panelling, cream painted walls and unlacquered brass fixtures.

Icy Blue Is The Light Blue Kitchen Cabinet Color Taking Over From Sage

It’s official, light blue kitchen cabinets are the shade du jour for 2026, snatching the fashion crown from the darker and earthier sage. Lending a soothing and restorative aura to your kitchen, icy blue works wonders no matter how small the space is, or how little light your kitchen gets.

Do you have a north-facing kitchen that needs brightening up? Paint all the cabinets a stylishly sub-zero shade of pale blue, like Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed Light or Benjamin Moore’s Raindance, and finish off by making the walls a cosy shade of cream.

French Blue Kitchen Cabinets With Marble and Brass

For anyone who’d prefer a mid-tone shade of blue, like a cloudless summer sky, a French Blue kitchen is the ideal choice. Created by Edward Bulmer, this heritage hue offers the perfect blend of classic and contemporary, effortlessly transforming your kitchen into a tranquil sanctuary.

To get the best effect, why not blend French blue painted cabinets with a gleaming brass bridge faucet and a blue-and-white checked cafe curtain under the sink window, for a dash of refined chic straight out of Provence?

If you can’t get your hands on Edward Bulmer’s sought-after shade, don’t fret, you can also try Farrow & Ball’s sumptuous Lulworth Blue for the same modish effect.

Denim Blue for a Blue and White Kitchen With Some Wear in It

If Kate Hudson is your interiors inspiration and you’d like to emulate her ‘Blue Jean Baby’ blue and white kitchen, the aesthetic is deliciously easy to achieve, even if you don’t have an A-list budget.

All you need is a denim-toned shade of blue paint (Farrow & Ball’s Selvedge is a prime example), which really shines if you use it on lower cabinets or to update your range alcove or pantry.

Accent this vibrant hue with light blue marble countertops, some sleek white cafe appliances and, as the finishing touch, a shelf of mismatched blue-and-white china plates, for a kitchen that is both timeless and very much in vogue.

Save the Deepest Shade for a Navy Blue Kitchen Island

Remember the uber-stylish blue-gray kitchen island from The Intern? Why not take things a step further with a bold and beautiful navy blue island that will really make a statement.

After all, navy blue has been in fashion for time immemorial, and its rich deep hue transforms any kitchen into a space simply oozing effortless elegance. Think Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue or Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy and a contrasting cream-painted perimeter, for a showstopping kitchen island or bar your family and friends will be complimenting for years to come.

Oh, and here’s an insider decorating tip: keep in mind that the color navy gets even darker after sunset, so it’s a good idea to install a couple of lantern pendants overhead, preferably with warm-toned bulbs for a cozy glow after nightfall.

Why Blue Kitchens Feel Like Home Right Now

The kitchen is the heart of the home, as the eternally fashionable Meyers never fails to show in her heart-warming and hilarious movies. As  a result, it’s no surprise that chic blue kitchens inspired by the director’s signature brand of relaxed, homespun elegance are all the rage right now. Blue is a color that both soothes and inspires after all, whether you’re painting your kitchen icy blue, French blue, denim or navy.

So, what are you waiting for? All you need to begin your kitchen’s true blue transformation is to take that first step, whether it’s painting your island the exact shade of the sky, or clearing a shelf for some exquisite blue and white china plates handed down from your grandma. Before you know it, you too will have a blue Meyers’ inspired kitchen that will have you feeling restored and motivated to create your own culinary magic.
